The Story

They said 210-plus at Eden Gardens was a challenging chase. KKR made it look like mission impossible. Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a colossal 226/8  and then tore through the purple-and-gold batting order like parchment.

If you blinked during the first six overs of either innings, you missed something extraordinary. This was T20 cricket at its most unhinged a neon-lit spectacle that had fans at Eden Gardens gasping, roaring, and holding their heads in disbelief in equal measure.

Sunrisers Hyderabad arrived at the iconic Kolkata ground carrying the swagger of a team that knows exactly how to bully opposition bowling. What followed was a masterclass in aggressive, purposeful batting and then a bowling display clinical enough to make you wince for KKR.

ACT I: SRH’S BATTING BLITZ

Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma have done this so many times in orange that it barely seems fair anymore. Head walked out to face Vaibhav Arora and immediately began treating the Eden pitch like his personal batting cage. Three consecutive boundaries in the first over set the tone and when Abhishek joined the carnage, the scoreboard clock couldn’t keep up.

OVER 2 · VAIBHAV ARORA

21 Runs. In One Over. Before Anyone Had Sat Down.

Head launched three back-to-back maximums two sixes and a four as poor Vaibhav Arora conceded 21 runs in a single over. The bowler’s face said it all.

Then came the moment that made every KKR spinner nervous. Varun Chakaravarthy  their ace, their matchwinner was introduced in over 4. Abhishek Sharma responded by depositing him for 25 runs in a single over, including three sixes and two fours. It was the most expensive Chakaravarthy over in recent T20 memory.

“SRH’s 84/1 at the end of the powerplay was the highest powerplay total of the 2026 season. Eden Gardens hadn’t seen anything like it.”

Kartik Tyagi finally provided KKR some relief, removing the dangerous Travis Head for 46 off 21 balls  a cameo that had already done its damage. But Head’s exit only opened the door for Abhishek Sharma to go even further.

Opener · SRH

Travis Head 46 runs off 21 balls

6 fours · 3 sixes · SR: 219
Dismantled KKR’s powerplay plans single-handedly

Opener · SRH

Abhishek Sharma 48 runs off 21 balls

4 fours · 4 sixes · SR: 228
25 off Chakaravarthy’s over alone

Heinrich Klaasen 52 runs off 35 balls

4 fours · 1 six · Stabilised the innings after 3 quick wickets

All-Rounder · SRH

Nitish Reddy 39 runs off 24 balls

4 fours · 1 six · Plus 2 wickets with the ball

The middle overs belonged to KKR’s pacers, who cleverly used slower variations to stem the flow but Heinrich Klaasen and Nitish Kumar Reddy stitched together an 82-run stand that was SRH’s second-highest ever for the 5th wicket or below against KKR. When the pair perished in quick succession, SRH were at 200/6 with two overs remaining.

Blessing Muzarabani deserved credit his 4/41 was the second-best bowling figures for KKR against SRH in IPL history. But the scoreboard already read 226/8 when the last wicket fell. That’s a mountain. And mountains, as KKR were about to discover, do not move.

ACT II: THE CHASE THAT WASN’T

KKR’s chase began in the most spectacular fashion imaginable. Impact substitute Finn Allen came to the crease and treated David Payne’s first over like batting practice 4, 4, 6, 6, 4. 24 runs off the first five balls. The third-highest first-over score in IPL history.

OVER 1 · FINN ALLEN

24 Runs in 5 Balls. Eden Erupts.

Allen’s blitz included back-to-back sixes over the sightscreen. For a brief, electric moment, KKR fans dared to believe. KKR 50 in just 3.2 overs their quickest ever.

And then Harsh Dubey walked in and changed everything. Tossing the ball up in just the second over, the spinner induced Allen into a caught-and-bowled for 28 off 7 balls. The momentum shifted. The Eden crowd fell half-silent.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi was sensational back-to-back fifties was his reward for a brilliant 52 off 29 but a chaotic run-out ended his innings in heartbreaking fashion. Rinku Singh called, Raghuvanshi started, and by the time the confusion cleared, the 20-year-old was walking back having done everything right except survive his partner’s indecision.

From 137/5, KKR needed a miracle. Instead they got a Jaydev Unadkat over two wickets in two balls to effectively end the contest. The left-armer has haunted Ajinkya Rahane his entire career (5 dismissals in 9 innings), and on this night he turned executioner for the lower order as well.

3-27 Unadkat’s final bowling figures

SRH’s pacers conceded just 27 runs in 4 overs across the final stages of the chase. Their spinners, led by Harsh Dubey, were equally miserly at the crucial phase. For KKR, the stat that stings most: they have now lost all 13 previous attempts at chasing 210-plus in IPL history. This was number 14.

Ishan Kishan, captaining SRH for the first time after Travis Head went off as impact sub, led from the front sharp reviews, aggressive field placements, and the kind of tactical nous that made every bowling change count.

SRH. RELENTLESS.

In a tournament full of spectacular performances, Sunrisers Hyderabad continue to set the standard. Their batting is terrifying. Their bowling is clinical. Their fielding is sharp.
